perform!

hmm.. today's halloween.. happy halloween to everyone.. though no one may be reading this, i just would like to greet the world a happy halloween :)

anyway, as usual, i would be writing about my lessons once more. today, i'm supposed to attend one today, but since I'm just waiting for mama and papa to finish preparing to go to Cavite, I decided not to attend.. I was almost tempted to attend yesterday evening, but i decided against it, practice na lang muna ko ng facial expressions.. hehehe.

i attended lessons just this Wednesday. I was testing if I'll get to Center for Pop if I leave the office at 5pm. I almost didn't make it. For one, the MRT was stuck when I got in line. People weren't being allowed in the terminal area because we had to let a couple of trains pass because of a stalled train in the Buendia station. I thought it was a sign not to proceed, but I chose to continue the MRT queue, if i didn't get on a train by 6pm, i won't go. I did, got to Cubao station 10 minutes to 6:30. Took the walkathon route once more.. arrived in CPMP around 6:45.

When I got there, some of the coaches (Coach Yen, Coach Myk and another one who looked like Coach JV pero hindi sya) were discussing what terms were supposed and not supposed to be used in L1, since it may confuse the students once they get to L2. Dynamics or something. Interrupting is something I really hate to do. Finally napansin na nila ko.. i proceeded to MPH.

Coach Dynes was the coach for the day. Only one other girl was there.. she was already singing when I got there. She was on her 9th session already, her song was Heaven. She was ok, Coach Dynes mentioned her voice was quite throaty when she started, hindi na ngayon. She can also reach the high notes pretty well.

Then came me. The first try was ok, but Coach said i chopped a certain word.. I took in air in the middle of it.. exact words: "Okay yung tones.. pero hindi ko mapapatawad yung paghinga mo dun sa 'pagkakataon'. Hindi china-chop yun." Okay repeat..

Since my minus one was a pure minus one and not a multiplex, we have difficulty finding "where we are" when we rewind. So repeat means rewind from the start. The other repeats I had were for focus, and lack of basic performance techniques, like armwork, blocking, expression, etc. Hayy.. performance.. ang hiraaap!!!

She suggested some armwork tips (when she does it, it looks easy, natural and effortless.. when i do it.. its the exact opposite!).. and advised me to exaggerate my facial expression coz that's probably the reason why my face remains blank.. i have to admit, i am no performer (and I don't see my self as one, sobra ang hiya ko sa katawan), and to a certain degree, i find the whole expression thing corny, since I really can't relate to the message of my song.. but I really want to do it naman. After several tries, I finally finished the freakin song.. hayy!

Oh, while I was singing, another girl came in. It's her 2nd session, it was also Coach Dynes who oriented her. She had a duet song prepared, Sun and Moon or Solo Saxophone from Miss Saigon. Coach didn't approve of it, kasi nga daw duet. The girl suggested "I Honestly Love You", but again was declined. She was made to choose a more challenging song. She ended up with Natalie Cole's Starting Over Again. I later learned that her name was Vicky. She has some difficulty with making her voice 'whole' and belting out.. i myself had problems with belting out during the beginning.. but my voice was already 'whole'.

That day, our lesson was about Tonal Quality. I was particularly curious with what Coach meant by the "good tonal quality" comment she had made on my first day there. It turned out that the thing was a compliment.. (it sure sounds like one). we also did some kind of an "ear training" exercise.. in fairness, i didn't screw up naman.. it took me max 2 tries to get the tone right. the others, took some more tries. pero none of us took more than 6 tries to get the right tune. :)

after the lessons, the second try was on. the first girl, with performance problems as well, came up. at some points needed to stop again to let the performance out, as well as some high notes. after she sang, coach gave her a few more pointers on performance. when my turn came, i simply stammered.. "narinig ko na po lahat.." with a smile.. hehehe. as far as i remember, i wasn't made to repeat that much, maybe once or twice only. she says my performance was better the 2nd time, but i was dying to improve.. i felt it wasn't enough.. :(

as for vicky, she sang the song the 2nd time around.. it was better, she had a better grasp of the tones and the lyrics. she was quite observant. she was advised not to shout the high notes, but to belt out, and to master the lyrics of her song.

while coach dynes was "autographing" our manuals (hehehe), i asked her if there would be classes come halloween. she said yes. vicky claimed that they had to work on tuesday. i thought she was a student, with her casual get-up. it turned out, she was also part of the working class (a first!! yahoo!) na rin.. she works in a call center in ortigas. the younger girl said she thought i was Level 2 already (uyy) because I had an ID. and get this, she thought i was still a student.. mwahaha.. laki ng ngiti ko.. hahaha. in fairness, i didn't look like a working lady that day mainly because I had a casual blouse on (which was SOP if i was planning to attend lessons). Another thing, i wore a denim jacket that day.

About the Level 2 thing with the other girl, I made an offhand remark that "i can't get there" which Coach Dynes heard. Sabi nya, "Sobra naman to..". I explained, i had difficulty expressing, hindi ako pwede don. She claimed it was ok, i wasn't even halfway through my sessions. She said I just needed a little more polishing on the song, and I should be ready to change my song (I have mastered it na??). Honestly, I don't think I have.. I know there's still plenty of room to improve. I replied that I'd choose an easier song next time (hehehe). Hindi daw dapat ganon.. dapat daw pataas ang level, hindi pababa.. that gives me jitters.. a harder song..?

But I'd rather get a harder slow song than a fast song.. dancing gives me the creeps.. what more can dancing plus singing do?

Vicky and I went home together.. took the walkathon route to where the freakin Jeepneys pass. Chikahan.. i even told her of a less expensive route she could use going to CPMP.

Ayun, made another new friend yet again. I arrived home late.. but it was worth it.
